Dog Mentor

At Earley Springs, we are incredibly fortunate to work closely with the esteemed Dog Mentor program. We believe in providing a holistic and nurturing environment for our students, and the presence of a carefully trained therapy dog plays a crucial role in achieving this. We are delighted to introduce you to our wonderful canine companion, Belter.

Belter is a vital part of our school community, bringing a sense of calm, joy, and therapeutic support to our students. He has been specially trained through the Dog Mentor program to work with children who may experience communication and interaction difficulties, as well as those with complex needs.

The Benefits of Dog Mentoring

The Dog Mentor program, as detailed on their website https://www.thedogmentor.co.uk/, highlights numerous benefits of incorporating dogs into educational settings. These include:

  • Improved Emotional Regulation: Dogs can provide a calming presence, helping children manage anxiety and stress. Their gentle nature can create a safe and supportive environment, fostering emotional well-being.
  • Enhanced Social Skills: Interacting with a dog can encourage children to develop empathy, communication, and social interaction skills. Belter provides opportunities for students to practice these skills in a non-judgmental and enjoyable way.
  • Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem: Building a bond with a dog can boost a child’s confidence and self-esteem. The unconditional acceptance and affection offered by Belter can have a profound impact on a child’s sense of worth.
  • Reduced Anxiety and Stress: The presence of a dog can lower stress hormones and promote relaxation. This is particularly beneficial for children who may experience anxiety related to school or social situations.
  • Improved Reading and Communication: Some children find it less intimidating to read aloud to a dog than to an adult. Belter provides a non-threatening audience, encouraging children to practice their reading and communication skills.
  • Increased Attendance and Engagement: The presence of a dog can make school a more enjoyable and welcoming place, leading to improved attendance and engagement in learning.

Belter’s presence at Earley Springs complements our commitment to providing a tailored and supportive learning environment. He works alongside our dedicated staff to create a positive and enriching experience for all our students. We are proud to partner with the Dog Mentor program and witness the positive impact Belter has on our school community.
